Biography
Elsa was born and raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. She attended the University of Puerto Rico and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Chemistry. She spent the following six years working in pre-clinical research focused on the detection of cell-surface biomarkers in various cell-based and mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. She enrolled in medical school in 2008 and obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 2012. She then began her residency in Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She has been involved in a number of clinical research projects focused on functional neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgery which have been presented at national meetings. She is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Neuromodulation Society, the American Epilepsy Society, and Women in Neurosurgery. Her interests in neurosurgery include: pediatric neurosurgery, functional neurosurgery, neurosurgical oncology, skull base surgery, and epilepsy surgery. In her free time, Elsa enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dogs, volunteering at Cold Noses Foundation, and traveling to Puerto Rico.
