Maggie Brand

Graduate Student

Biography

Hi there! My name is Maggie Brand, and I am originally from Hampton, NH. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of MCW’s sixth cohort of genetic counseling students! I attended the University of Connecticut and graduated in May 2024 with a B.S. in Diagnostic Genetic Sciences. Ever since high school, I knew that my path was leading towards genetic counseling, so I focused on an undergraduate degree that set a foundation in diagnostic and molecular laboratory skills. During my time at UConn, I completed a four-month internship at Yale University School of Medicine’s Molecular Laboratory, served as a peer mentor for my major, and wrote various articles for our university’s Her Campus organization. After graduating, I worked as a clinical research assistant for two genetics clinics where I was able to establish patients with specialty clinics, collect data from medical records, and work with various medical professionals to contribute to research literature. From there, I transitioned to working in a clinical setting as a genetic counseling assistant in a hereditary cancer clinic. Here, I was able to coordinate and order genetic testing, track results, and construct pedigrees. Both experiences created my passion for rare genetic conditions and cemented that genetic counseling was the career for me, especially in the clinical setting. Outside of academics, I love to explore new restaurants in the Milwaukee area, watch football and hockey, take spin classes and spend time with my niece! I am also an avid movie goer of all genres, especially taking to action and horror!
