Why did I choose MCW for fellowship? During my pediatric residency at MCW, I joined Dr. Joanne Lagatta's research group and took on varied opportunities within clinical research including assisting in writing an IRB data-banking application to explore parent-proxy patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for infants with BPD. Joanne provided the opportunity and instruction to conduct a secondary analysis of pilot data to observe associations of BPD-adapted asthma PROMs. While we saw significant associations with reported symptoms using these questionnaires, we also identified a failure to capture symptoms in a significant portion of patients still requiring acute care. By staying on with MCW for a fellowship, I could expand on the research I started and explore new opportunities.
From a clinical perspective, I saw in residency and continue to experience that the MCW neonatal fellows provide a truly significant role in managing teams in the NICU with plenty of support available from collegial attendings and NNPs, day and night. The program's faculty are not only accomplished researchers and clinicians but are also passionate about education and mentorship. The level IV Children's Wisconsin NICU provided unique opportunities with a consistent census, including collaborative management of surgically corrected diseases, congenital cardiac defects, and approaching diagnostic pathways for rare diseases.
One of the best things about living in Milwaukee? The summers are lovely with great activities for families with and without children. I really enjoy kayaking with my wife up the Wisconsin River in Downtown Milwaukee and checking out the many fantastic breweries (many of which provide spaces for families with young children).
