Biography

Dr. Mirza Ahmar Beg is a postdoctoral researcher at the Medical College of Wisconsin working in the field of adipose tissue biology, lipid metabolism, and metabolic disease. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating adipose tissue remodeling, mitochondrial metabolism, and thermogenic programming in obesity. His work integrates molecular biology, metabolic phenotyping, and adipocyte functional studies to identify mechanisms underlying obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. Dr. Beg’s long-term research goal is to develop translational strategies and therapeutic targets for obesity-associated metabolic diseases through mechanistic studies of adipose tissue biology.

Honors and Awards

During Dr Beg's MS and PhD training from India, he was awarded several prestigious and competitive fellowships. He received the GATE–Junior Research Fellowship in 2014, followed by a multi-million INR scholarship from the University Grants Commission in 2015, shortly after beginning his PhD. That same year, he was also selected for a fellowship from the Indian Council of Medical Research. In 2016, Dr. Beg earned the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, a merit-based award recognizing academic excellence during his MS studies. After serving as a Junior Research Fellow for three years, he was promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 2018 and held this position until the completion of his PhD. Throughout this period, he developed strong expertise in protein biology, immunology, and biochemical techniques, which ultimately formed the foundation for his selection into a postdoctoral research program where he earned American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Research Interests

Dr. Mirza’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms linking adipose tissue biology to cardiometabolic diseases. By integrating molecular, cellular, and translational approaches, he aims to uncover novel therapeutic targets, with a particular emphasis on extracellular matrix remodeling and mitochondrial function in adipocytes. His long-term career goal is to establish an independent research program dedicated to advancing strategies for preventing and treating obesity-associated cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
