Biography

Hello! My name is Sydney Wilson, and I am from Burnsville, Minnesota. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in December 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Genetics, Cell Biology and Development. I have been interested in becoming a genetic counselor since my senior year of high school after I was fortunate enough to have been a part of a 3-month shadowing program with two genetic counselors at Region’s Hospital in St. Paul. My passion for genetic counseling only grew during my undergrad where I was a part of the pre-genetic counseling club, became a research assistant for the genetic counseling graduate program at the University of Minnesota, and spent a summer as an intern at Mayo Clinic in their Clinical Genetics Extraction and Sequencing Core Laboratory. I also became a Community Educator for the Alzheimer’s Association where I led presentations about various topics related to Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia to members of the community.

After graduating, I worked as a Genetics Clinical Case Coordinator at Children’s Minnesota before switching to the oncology setting as a Genetic Counseling Support Assistant at the Allina Health Cancer Institute in Minneapolis. My experiences in clinic furthered my ability to empathize, tailor my communication, and help patients navigate genetic testing. I am looking forward to further developing these skills during my time here at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

In my free time I enjoy reading, jewelry making, thrifting, trying new coffee shops, watching tv/movies, spending time with family/friends, and cuddling my cat! I am very excited to be a part of the 5th cohort at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and I can’t wait to start this chapter of my journey to becoming a genetic counselor here in Milwaukee!
