Meet the Speakers
Karen J. MacKinnon, BPharm, RPh
In her role as the Director of Outreach Programs at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) School of Pharmacy, Karen MacKinnon, BPharm, RPh, is responsible for developing corporate partnerships, activities and services that support the creation of new pharmacy practice models. Professor MacKinnon received her Bachelor of Science, Pharmacy (BPharm) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. She completed her post-graduate clinical pharmacy internship at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. Professor MacKinnon is a registered pharmacist in Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Arizona. She has over 25 years of experience in education and has assisted with the establishment of three previous academic pharmacy programs, having served in the roles of Director of Experiential Education and Director of Professional Laboratories. Professor MacKinnon has practiced in institutional and community pharmacy practice settings throughout her career. Professor MacKinnon is currently engaged with local and state immunization grants to support pharmacists’ role in optimizing and expanding immunization access in Wisconsin.

Joyce Sanchez, MD, FACP
Joyce Sanchez, MD, FACP is an infectious disease specialist and assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she serves as Medical Director of the Travel Health Clinic. Dr. Sanchez is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she stayed to complete her internal medicine residency. She received her infectious disease fellowship training at Stanford Hospital and the University of Minnesota. She began her career at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota before joining the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2017.
Dr. Sanchez is an advocate for global health awareness, interprofessional collaboration and vaccine education. She has spoken at over 40 regional, national and international platforms on infectious disease topics of global significance that have high impact on the greater Southeast Wisconsin area including COVID-19, influenza, measles, and mosquito and tick-borne disease. As pharmacists are her favorite health professionals to partner with, she is excited to be speaking to you today about the history of vaccines and lessons learned.

James H. Conway, MD, FAAP
James H. Conway, MD, FAAP is a Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program Director, and Director of the Office of Global Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine & Public Health, as well as Associate Director for the UW-Madison Global Health Institute. He is responsible for coordinating global health educational programs involving health professional students at UW-Madison, and oversight of international programs in the UW School of Medicine & Public Health, while maintaining a busy clinical practice.
Dr. Conway is actively involved in projects helping improve immunization coverage in the United States and abroad. He currently serves as technical advisor for a longitudinal collaboration between the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control, working with national pediatrics professional organizations worldwide on vaccine advocacy activities. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and received an AAP Special Achievement Award in 2009 for his global immunization projects, and another in 2016 for leadership in HPV vaccine advocacy. He is Medical Director for UW Health Immunization Programs and serves on the Wisconsin Council on Immunization Practice. Current projects are focused on vaccine hesitancy, respiratory viral transmission in schools, improving uptake of vaccines in adolescents and adults, and studies of vaccine effectiveness.

Ryan Bender, PharmD
Ryan Bender, PharmD has been working in independent community pharmacies since he was 16 years old. A 2005 graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy, he started his career as a pharmacist with Hometown Pharmacy before moving to Forward Pharmacy, where he is the Director of Clinical Services. Dr. Bender is a member of the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin’s Expanding Immunization Access committee and sits on the board of the Dane County Immunization Coalition.
