Children's Wisconsin Pediatric SANE Program

Children's Wisconsin Children’s Wisconsin is proud to announce the first ever Pediatric SANE program in Wisconsin. SANE stands for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Registered nurses with SANE training can provide specialized, comprehensive nursing care to children and their families after a sexual assault. They provide trauma-informed, holistic care for the child which includes: the collection of medical-forensic evidence, testing, treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention, communication with law enforcement and advocacy partners, as well as follow-up services within the community.

Sexual abuse or assault of children is more prevalent than most people realize. One in 10 children will be sexually assaulted before they turn 18. Approximately 20% of child victims are sexually abused before they turn 8 years old. It is estimated that 60% of children who are sexually abused or assaulted never tell anyone.

Child sexual assault is a crisis in our nation and carries with it a variety of short- and long-term mental and physical health problems for the victim and their family. At Children’s Wisconsin, we believe that kids deserve the best and with the implementation of our Pediatric SANE Program we are striving to achieve that!
