How recent must a graduation date be to be considered for an interview?
There are no criteria for date of graduation, but to be licensed in Wisconsin, all USLME Steps must be passed within a 10-year period.
Does your program require clinical experience in the US health care system?
Yes. US clinical experience in a psychiatric setting is also a must.
When are interviews offered?
Interviews are offered October through January. We take time and care in reviewing each application as thoroughly as able to assist in the interview decision-making process. As a result, many interview invites may not be released until late into the application cycle. This is not a comment on application quality, but rather on the time we take to review each application.

Unfortunately, the NEW Psychiatry Program is not able to offer observerships or externships at this time.
What are your application requirements?
For application to our program, we require:
- An ERAS Application
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Dean’s letter
- Transcripts
- Personal statement or letter of intent
- CV
- USMLE or COMLEX transcripts
What are your USMLE or COMLEX cutoff scores for interview consideration?
We do not use specific score cutoff criteria when making our interview invite selections, and we do our best to consider an applicant’s application in its entirety. This stated, with an expected 200 applicants per available PGY-1 position, scores are strongly considered.
What USMLE/COMLEX scores are required before I can interview?
US Grads
Completion of Step/Level - 1 is required and Step/Level - 2 scores are preferred prior to the offer of an interview. In order to be included on our final NRMP match rank list at the end of the recruitment season, Step/Level 1, 2 and CS/PE will need to be posted with passing scores.
IMGs
Passing scores on both Step 1 & 2 are required for interview consideration. Step 3 completion is preferred. Although possible, obtaining an interview without completing Step 3 is unlikely.
Do you consider applicants with prior licensing exam failures?
Yes, provided a subsequent passing score has been posted. Multiple failures decrease the likelihood of an interview invite. To be licensed in Wisconsin, all USLME Steps must be passed within a 10-year period.
Do you accept H1 or J1 visas?
Yes, we will consider applicants who qualify for an H1 or J1 visa. Applicants must have an appropriate visa to begin Graduate Medical Education with the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. If a candidate does not obtain an appropriate visa that permits MCWAH to employ him/her on the designated start date, the training position will not be held and may be offered to another candidate.
