Research Interests

The intestinal microbiota play a key role in immune development and tissue homeostasis, and perturbations in microbial communities, particularly during early life, are associated with an increased risk of inflammatory and allergic diseases. Despite the profound influence of the microbiota on human health, the mechanisms by which microbial signals are sensed by the host to regulate immune function remain incompletely understood. The intestinal epithelium is uniquely positioned at the interface between the microbiota and the underlying immune system, serving as a critical mediator of host–microbe interactions. In the Eshleman Lab, we investigate how the microbiota regulate epithelial cell fate and function and how these epithelial processes shape immune homeostasis and susceptibility to inflammatory and allergic diseases. A major focus of our research is to understand how tuft cells, a specialized epithelial cell type, coordinate communication between the intestinal lumen and the immune system. Ultimately, our work aims to provide a mechanistic framework for understanding how epithelial cells sense microbial signals to control immune function in health and disease.
