Cardiovascular Team Completes 1,000th TAVR Procedure

Recently, the cardiovascular team at Froedtert Hospital performed its 1,000th transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, procedure. TAVR is a minimally invasive option to replace diseased aortic heart valves, and since FDA approval in 2010 has become the preferred treatment alternative for most adult patients with aortic stenosis. At Froedtert Hospital, the Structural Heart Team works together to determine the best option for each patient, whether that be surgical valve replacement, TAVR or participation in a clinical trial.

Early adoption of best practices means that most TAVR procedures at Froedtert Hospital are performed without general anesthesia, and most patients are ambulatory the same day of the procedure and go home the next day. From the program's inception in April 2017, Froedtert Hospital has distinguished itself with high procedural volume, innovation and excellent outcomes despite high patient and procedural complexity.

Congratulations to all involved, including team members from cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, anesthesia, imaging, ECHO, PAR and 3 West, in reaching this milestone and for positively impacting the lives of so many patients and their families.
