Dr. Kellie Brown Awarded U.S. Patent for Tool to Increase Safety During Removal of Failed Stent Grafts

Kellie R. Brown, MD, professor of surgery (vascular and endovascular surgery), as well as Brian Thorson and Benjamin Heard of Hjärta Care, are inventors of MCW’s recently issued U.S. Patent 11,351,047 for Devices and Methods for Stent Graft Extraction.

This patent pertains to a novel device for extracting a failed or infected endovascular stent graft from a blood vessel in a safe, efficient, and atraumatic manner.

This novel tool overcomes surgical difficulties and safety risks that vascular surgeons frequently encounter during the removal of failed stent grafts using other methods. The device incorporates a cylindrical design and an ergonomic curve, which allows better manipulation by the surgeon to trigger stent release from the vessel wall.

More information on this technology is detailed in the patent, which can be viewed online.
