Summer Health-Related Research Education Program (SHREP)

The Summer Health-Related Research Education Program (SHREP) is a competitive summer program for undergraduate and graduate students that provides immersive research experiences in biomedical science. Participants engage in hands-on basic and clinical research while exploring academic and professional pathways in medicine and biomedical research.

SHREP emphasizes scholarly development, critical thinking, and professional growth, strengthening students’ preparation for advanced study and careers in research and healthcare.

Application Timeline

The program spans approximately 10 weeks from late May through late July, with an estimated 40 hours per week, including occasional evening events.

Before you start your application

Before beginning your SHREP application, please gather the following materials and information:

  • A college transcript. Transcripts should be uploaded directly to the application. Only PDFs of your official transcript will be accepted.
  • The following is the information you will need to know about your evaluators: Name, Title, and Email Address.
The application is part of MCW’s undergraduate summer program shared application, in which you can apply to up to four different programs at once. Depending on the number of programs you are applying to, the application will take 40-60 minutes.

To be eligible for SHREP, students must demonstrate a strong interest in medical or allied health careers and meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 3.4 GPA in science and math courses
  • Completion of at least one year of college (typically three courses per academic term)
  • Enrollment at any accredited undergraduate institution

SHREP seeks academically motivated students who are prepared to engage in an intensive summer research experience. Applications are reviewed holistically, considering academic achievement, interest in biomedical research, leadership potential, and readiness to fully participate in the program.

To complete your SHREP application:

  1. Submit the online application.
  2. Submit an official college transcript by uploading it directly to the application.
  3. Submit two science-related electronic recommendations. Your recommenders will be emailed a link to complete an electronic recommendation form for you. SHREP will not consider letters of recommendation outside of this form.
  4. Be available for the full 10-week program. Commitment is approximately 40 hours per week.
