Douglas B. Evans, MD, FACS was the inaugural recipient of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons’ (AAES) Distinguished Service Award, presented at the 2026 AAES Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Evans is an internationally recognized surgical oncologist and leader in the surgical management of pancreatic cancer and surgical endocrine disease. His clinical insights on the management of patients with thyroid cancer and hereditary surgical endocrine disease, including early description of cortical-sparing adrenalectomy and the genotype-phenotype relationship in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2, has had a lasting impact on the care of these patients and has been the foundation of contemporary guidelines on patient management. Dr. Evans also has a strong history of service to the AAES, serving on the Council (2003 – 2006), as Recorder (2005 – 2008), President-Elect (2009 – 2010), and President (2010 – 2011).
His leadership was pivotal in the growth of the Endocrine Surgery programs at both MD Anderson Cancer Center and at MCW. As Chair of the Department of Surgery, he has supported the continued expansion of the program previously led by Stuart D. Wilson, MD through the establishment of the Division of Surgical Oncology, Section of Endocrine Surgery, and a clinical fellowship in Comprehensive Endocrine Surgery.
Throughout his career, Doug has been a successful and untiring advocate and mentor in the professional development and careers of residents, fellows, and faculty in Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Evans on this well-deserved achievement!
