Research Interests
Dr. Crotty's scholarly work is in the area of clinical informatics and healthcare delivery science, with a special focus on patient-facing informatics and technology to enhance the connection between patients and nurses, physicians, and allied care providers. His work centers on understanding how communities of patients, family members, community providers, and clinicians can collaborate using electronic tools, for prevention, care coordination, and chronic disease management. Dr. Crotty has a special interest in new media, including social media and social networking in healthcare, given that they have shaped how many people communicate outside of medicine. He has incorporated these technologies into educational, operational, and clinical environments.
Dr. Crotty uses a mixed-methods approach to answer many research and improvement questions, and have experience in both quantitative and qualitative methods, and user-centered design. He has studied the impact of patient portal use and clinical messaging in terms of understanding the users and non-users of this technology, to what extent a digital divide exists that can lead to disparities in care. He and his team are also studying how we can overcome these barriers. This work has now shifted to a focus on quality improvement and innovation in the delivery of care using new technology. More recently, they have been focusing on elderly patients and their caregivers, and the role of information technology can play in care coordination.
