Announcing the First Meeting of the Edwin Ellison Surgical Society

The Department of Surgery is delighted to announce the inaugural meeting of the Edwin Ellison Surgical Society (EESS), the alumni society of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s General Surgery Residency Program. This landmark gathering will take place on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Medical College of Wisconsin – just prior to the ACS Clinical Congress begins in Chicago.

The creation of the Edwin Ellison Surgical Society honors Dr. Edwin H. Ellison, the first full-time Chair of Surgery at MCW, whose vision unified surgical education in Milwaukee. The society is designed to connect alumni, fellows, and faculty, fostering mentorship, scholarship, and collaboration while celebrating the shared legacy of MCW surgeons.

The inaugural meeting will feature alumni presentations that highlight the breadth of surgical careers and research, as well as tours of MCW & Froedtert facilities for those interested in witnessing the tremendous growth around campus. Attendees will enjoy opportunities to reconnect with colleagues and mentors throughout the day, concluding with a reception at the Kimpton Journeyman Hotel in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.

The program will include presentations from several accomplished alumni, including Dr. Larry Bucshon (’93), cardiothoracic surgeon and former U.S. Congressman; Dr. Rachel Greenup (’11), Chief of Breast Surgical Oncology at Yale’s Smilow Cancer Hospital; Dr. Anahita Dua (’17), vascular surgeon at Harvard Medical School; and Dr. Kelly Collins (‘13), transplant surgeon and Director of Pediatric Liver at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Together, they are an example of the diverse professional impact of MCW graduates and the strength of our surgical community.

This first meeting of the Edwin Ellison Surgical Society is more than a reunion – it marks the beginning of a new tradition. By honoring our shared history and fostering meaningful connections, the society will strengthen ties within the surgical community for years to come. We warmly invite all alumni, fellows, and faculty to join us in Milwaukee this October as we launch this exciting new chapter together.
