MCW Advanced Practice Providers

Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant Critical Care Fellowship

The Medical College Physicians’ nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) post-graduate fellowship is a one-year training program that teaches fellows to become highly skilled in the multidisciplinary, collaborative, and evidence-based management of complex critically-ill patients in intensive care units. This program aims to attract new NP and PA graduates or those experienced with a desire for seeking a structured educational program to support and guide their development of proficient clinical decision making and their application of specialized skills in the care of the critically ill. Fellows will have rotations in the cardiovascular, medical, surgical, neurology, and transplant critical care as well as several electives. Two fellows are accepted into this program each year. A successful program will inform next steps in expanding post-graduate fellowship in other areas of practice.

Our Mission

To prepare NPs and PAs to practice in the specialty of critical care medicine as members of a multi-professional team.

Our Vision

To develop and implement an educational pathway for NPs and PAs that translates evidence-based didactics with proctored skill acquisition through clinical experiences and simulation. It is our vision that fellows will progress in clinical judgment and critical thinking skills as a full, contributing member of a multidisciplinary critical care medicine team.

About the Fellowship

The fellowship is an innovative 12-month curriculum composed of in-person didactics, online classrooms, simulation, proctored procedures and mentored clinical experiences. Fellows accepted into the program will be expected to work the schedules of their preceptors in each location to gain the best experience of the practice. Depending on the rotation, the average clinical work week expectation is about 50 hours with some rotations to evenings, nights, and weekends.
