How do I apply to your program?
The Psychiatry Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals (Milwaukee) accepts applications (for all PGY years) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Will you accept applications for PGY 2 residents
The Psychiatry Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin – Milwaukee accepts applications for Post-Graduate Year 1 and 2 through ERAS. Visit the ERAS website for more information.
How many letters of recommendation do you require?
We require four letters of recommendation (LOR).
Do you have a requirement on who writes the letters?
The most useful LORs are from someone with whom you’ve worked clinically, who can comment on your interpersonal skills, professionalism, care for patients, etc. If you have completed any previous training or left another program, we do require a LOR from your previous program director. We do not require a letter from the chairperson of your department.
What parts of the application need to be in before I will be considered for an interview?
We require the application, personal statement, Step 1 score and four letters of recommendation before being considered for an interview.
Do you require a minimum score on Step 1?
We do not have a hard cutoff for board scores, recognizing that some of the best residents can struggle with standardized exams. This is just one piece of information that we use to determine which candidates to invite.
Do you need to have Step 2 in before applying?
No. We require Step 1 (or COMLEX 1) and expect you to have passed Step 2 CK and CS (or equivalent prior to the Match).
When will applicants be invited?
We will begin reviewing applications on ERAS on September 15th. Invitations will begin soon after on a rolling basis. Given the time we put into the application review and invitation, it is not uncommon for us to send out invitations throughout October and November, sometimes into December… Applicants who are waitlisted or not selected for interviews will be notified through ERAS. If you have not heard from us, please check that all documentation has been downloaded onto ERAS. We may still be reviewing your application.
When will you start interviewing applicants?
We expect to start the interviewing process in mid-October.
Do you consider International Medical Graduates?
We do consider and accept qualified IMGs. We review a number of items on the application, including prior psychiatric experience in the US and evidence of a command of the English language. As with all of our applicants, evidence of a passion for a career in psychiatry and a social conscience are also valued.
Do you sponsor Visas?
We accept J-1 and H-1B visas. Please see the Graduate Medical Education website for further clarification.
Do you prefer local candidates?
Our residents are from all over the world. That being said, it is helpful for us to know if you have a particular reason for looking at the program in Milwaukee.
Do you offer observerships?
Our department does not routinely offer observerships, externships or pre-match positions.
