Kathleen Schmainda, PhD, Honored With the Hector F. DeLuca Scientific Achievement Award from BioForward Wisconsin
Kathleen M. Schmainda, PhD, professor of biophysics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, has been selected to receive the Hector F. DeLuca Scientific Achievement Award from BioForward Wisconsin for her groundbreaking work in biophysics, neuroscience and biomedical engineering.
The award recognizes a Wisconsin scientist who demonstrates excellence in science, education and medicine. Established in 2015, the award honors groundbreaking scientific contributions that expand the boundaries of discovery and advance human health.
Dr. Schmainda has built an impressive career at the intersection of biophysics, neuroscience and biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on advanced MRI and brain tumor imaging. Since joining MCW’s faculty in 1996, she has developed research focused on translating sophisticated imaging technologies into tools that can improve the evaluation and treatment of patients with brain tumors.
Her work includes establishing MCW’s first translational brain tumor imaging research laboratory and contributing to the development of a national consensus protocol for the clinical use of perfusion MRI in patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors. She also has led multicenter clinical trials, developed patented imaging technologies and helped translate discoveries into commercial products through Wisconsin-based startup companies.
The recognition also highlights the broader impact of MCW research from discoveries made in the laboratory to innovations that can ultimately improve patient care.
The 2026 Wisconsin Biohealth Awards will be presented at the Wisconsin Biohealth Summit, Oct. 21–22 in Milwaukee.
