Biophysics Researcher Coauthors Consensus Statement on Measurement of Reactive Oxygen Species
Balaraman Kalyanaraman, PhD, chair and professor of biophysics and the Harry R. & Angeline E. Quadracci Professor in Parkinson’s Research, coauthored a consensus statement from an international group of researchers, which was published in Nature Metabolism. This paper, “Guidelines for measuring reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage in cells and in vivo,” discusses and distills the best methodologies and guidelines for measurement of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage in biological systems. The goal is to be a useful resource for researchers from diverse fields who need to measure reactive oxygen species or investigate the biological importance of oxidative events.
Specifically, this consensus statement presents 16 recommendations to follow when measuring reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species are involved in redox signaling and play important roles in physiological and pathophysiological conditions.
