Dr. Tammy Kindel Receives R01 Grant to Study Cardiovascular Impact of Bariatric Surgery

Tammy Kindel, MD, PhD, associate professor of surgery (minimally invasive and gastrointestinal surgery), has been awarded a five-year, $2.2 million R01 grant for the project titled, “Identifying Gut Microbiome Mediated Mechanisms for Diastolic Dysfunction Improvement After Bariatric Surgery” from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is closely associated with obesity, with no treatment known to decrease cardiovascular mortality. Dr. Kindel’s project will focus on understanding how bariatric surgery improves heart function in patients with obesity-related heart failure and will lead to the development of new surgical and non-surgical therapies for this disease.
