MCW Faculty Contribute to Suicide Prevention Success on Hoan Bridge

Safety fencing installed on Milwaukee’s Hoan Bridge in 2023 has led to zero suicides in 2024 and 2025 – a major public health milestone. Sara Kohlbeck and Dr. Sehr Khan, assistant professors at the Medical College of Wisconsin, were instrumental in advocating for this change. Their research emphasized the importance of reducing access to lethal means, a proven suicide prevention strategy.

The project, funded through Act 58 in the 2021 state budget, has shown no increase in suicides at other locations, underscoring its effectiveness.
