The Department of Pediatrics focuses on excellence in creating new approaches toward patient care, discovering new advances in biotechnology and developing effective educational programs for our students, residents, fellows and faculty. Our clerkship, residencies, and subspecialty fellowships are among the best that academic pediatrics has to offer. Our faculty participate in all aspects of advancing knowledge to benefit children whether in the community addressing health disparities of underserved children or in the laboratory creating gene therapies or tumor vaccines to enhance survival of children with life threatening illnesses.
Faculty from all over the world have joined our department, which has over 200 Assistant, Associate, and Full Professors. Our collaboration with other departments has helped to create one of the best congenital heart disease programs in the USA, with outstanding and growing basic research programs in immunology, birth defects, genetics, oncology, stem cell transplantation, diabetes mellitus, hematology, and pulmonary vascular biology. In addition to high tech basic research, our high touch approach to sick children has created programs like the Fetal Concerns Program, Fight Asthma Milwaukee, the Palliative Care Program, Project Ujima, Child Development Center, Child Protection Center, Poison Control Center, Milwaukee Adolescent Health Program, and the Center for the Advancement of Urban Children. Our Emergency Department Trauma Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit faculty provide highly effective, life-saving care for complicated patients from all over the Midwest. Survival outcomes from these units are among the best in the USA.
