Fellows work as consultants at the subacute units which include the geriatric evaluation and management, palliative care, nursing home care, and the comprehensive integrated inpatient rehabilitation units. The VA Medical Center also provides longitudinal outpatient clinic experience through the memory disorders clinic, and the geriatric psychiatry clinic rotations. During the VA Neuropsychology clinic rotations, the fellows will participate in weekly comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations. Under the direct supervision of the faculty, the fellows will conduct interviews, learn to score and interpret test reports, and gain proficiency in writing final neuropsychological testing reports. The fellows will also complete a rotation with the Home-based primary care program.
Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Froedtert Hospital Campus (FH), a 400-bed private hospital, the primary teaching hospital of the Medical College serves as the venue for the geriatric psychiatry consultation-liaison (C/L) rotations. The fellows will present and discuss all new and follow-up cases seen with consultation-liaison psychiatry and/or geriatric psychiatry faculty. The fellows will learn to integrate conceptual models for understanding complex geriatric problems in medical/surgical settings, and refine consultation skills using the biopsychosocial model approach to the C/L work. The fellows will teach and supervise medical students and general psychiatry residents, and function as the geriatric component of the psychosomatic medicine team.
The outpatient senior health memory and mood disorders clinics located at the Froedtert Health North Hills health center, and embedded in a primary care clinic setting offers the fellow unique opportunities to work in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team comprising of nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants and therapists.
The inpatient geriatric psychiatry experience is obtained at the Community Memorial Hospital. Under the supervision of faculty, the fellows will function in a junior level attending role, provide direction to a multidisciplinary treatment team, and supervise general psychiatry residents and medical students.
Village at Manor Park (VMP) Continuing Care Retirement Community is a non-profit organization that provides a multitude of services for the elderly including independent living and assisted living apartments, skilled nursing, dementia care and ventilator care units. VMP will be a longitudinal rotation where the fellows function as a consultant to the patients at the assisted living, skilled nursing and ventilator care units. In addition, VMP also has a rehabilitation center where the fellows interact with the speech, occupational, and physical therapists, and participate in functional evaluations.
