Inspiring Future Scientists: MCW’s Mellowes Center and Genetic Counseling Program Hosts Students for DNA Day & Career Panel

Inspiring Future Scientists: MCW’s Mellowes Center and Genetic Counseling Program hosts Ronald Reagan High School students for DNA Day & Career Panel

On April 3-4, 2025, leadership and students from the MCW Master of Science in Genetic Counseling program and the Mellowes Center for Genomics Sciences and Precision Medicine engaged with nearly 120 high-achieving junior and senior learners from Ronald Reagan High School (RRHS) in Milwaukee. The annual two-day career program incorporates an impactful strategy to inspire and introduce students to careers in science, genetics, and medicine and foster excitement and passion for science in the youth in our community.

Day 1: Career Panel at Ronald Reagan High School

Four MCW professionals participated in a dynamic Career Panel at RRHS, sharing their personal journeys, educational pathways, and real-life insights into working in the field of genetics, biomedical research, and community outreach. Students heard from panelists representing a range of roles—from genetic counseling and molecular diagnostics to research and clinical care.

Each speaker presented brief slides introducing themselves, describing a typical day in their profession, and highlighting why they’re passionate about their work. The panelists also provided practical advice on the education and skills needed to pursue these careers. A small-group Q&A session allowed students to ask thoughtful questions and make connections with potential mentors.

After the conclusion of the Career Panel, students took part in a small group activity led by a group of current genetic counseling students. The students were led through a genetics case study which provided the opportunity to gain insight into the various components of a genetic counseling session.

Day 2: DNA Day Lab Experience at MCW

The following day, seniors from RRHS visited MCW’s Mellowes Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine for an immersive DNA Day Lab Experience. Students were split into three rotating groups to participate in hands-on activities and interactive learning stations:

Station 1: DNA Isolation – Led by Jaime Wendt Andrae and Michael Tschannen, students performed a real DNA isolation, analyzed sample quality, and discussed the importance of fragment analysis in diagnostics.

Station 2: Sample Workflow & Sequencing – Dr. Angie Mathison and Dr. Gareth Pollin walked students through the full journey of a sample—from preparation and sequencing to analysis and modeling.

Station 3: Medical Management – Rebecca Tyler, Anna Purdy, and a team of genetic counseling graduate students introduced students to clinical genomics, medical management, and the critical role of test interpretation in patient care.

Between stations, students toured MCW labs, enjoyed lunch in the CVC Conference Room, and ended the day with closing remarks, a certificate ceremony, and program brochures to explore future opportunities.

Building Pathways, One Student at a Time

These two events reflect MCW’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and education, particularly through programs that foster interest in STEM careers among underrepresented and local high school students. Special thanks to all the presenters, organizers, and volunteers who made these events possible—and to the students at RRHS for their enthusiasm and curiosity.
