Medical College of Wisconsin Names Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine

Milwaukee, Sept. 27, 2019 – Joseph W. Gravel, Jr., MD, has been named as chair of the department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and will join the institution on Sept. 30, 2019.

“Dr. Gravel was identified as the top candidate for this role after a comprehensive national search process,” said Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, dean, School of Medicine, provost and executive vice president for MCW. “We are very fortunate to be able to benefit from his significant experience as an acknowledged national leader in the field of Family Medicine.“

Dr. Gravel currently serves as professor of Family Medicine & Community Health at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., and chief medical officer and chair of Family Medicine and Community Health at the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center in Lawrence, Mass. Dr. Gravel also serves as chair of the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Committee, on the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine’s board of directors and on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Review Committee for Family Medicine.

Dr. Gravel was assistant clinical professor of Family Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Va., from 1992-1994 and assistant clinical professor of Family Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine from 1994-2007. Dr. Gravel also held positions of increasing seniority at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Medford, Mass., from 1994-2015.

Dr. Gravel earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tufts University in 1982 and earned his MD degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1986. He served at an internship in Family Medicine at Dewitt Army Community Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Va., from 1986-1987 and was a medical officer in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Belvoir/Fort Devens in Massachusetts and overseas in South Korea and West Germany. Dr. Gravel served a residency in Family Medicine at the Fairfax Family Practice Center/Virginia Commonwealth University in Fairfax, Va., from 1990-1992, where he was academic chief resident.
