MCW Pathology & Laboratory Medicine - Hematopathology

The Hematopathology section at the Medical College of Wisconsin, under the direction of Dr. Alexandra Harrington, specializes in the diagnosis of blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissue disorders and the interpretation of hematology and coagulation laboratory tests.

The Hematopathology team provides care for adult and pediatric patients across the Froedtert Health system and Children’s Wisconsin, as well as many other local and regional care facilities.

Our team has expertise diagnosing leukemias, lymphomas, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative neoplasms, plasma cell myeloma and precursors dyscrasias, as well as anemias, bone marrow failure syndromes, hemoglobinopathies, and reactive lymphadenopathies through the microscopic examination of bone marrow and lymph node biopsies and flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular studies.

We perform interpretations on over 2100 bone marrow biopsies, 4200 flow cytometry specimens, and 500 in-house tissue specimens annually, as well as many second-opinion biopsy interpretations. Additionally, the coagulation service interprets laboratory testing for complex patients with von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and hypercoagulable states, such as lupus anticoagulants.

The Hematopathology section provides medical direction and oversight for the hematology and coagulation laboratories at Wisconsin Diagnostics Laboratories.

We also teach hematopathology to medical students, pathology residents, and pathology and oncology fellows.
