Director of Precision Medical Laboratory, Faculty Open Rank

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin is inviting applications for a full-time Director of the Precision Medicine Laboratory faculty position at a rank that is commensurate with experience. This individual will also be an Associate Director in the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will lead the molecular diagnostics and precision medicine initiatives within the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and oversee the Precision Medicine Laboratory in collaboration with the Clinical Cytogenetics directors. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinical colleagues and basic science in Pathology as well as with the community at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin to help enhance the utilization of precision medicine assays to improve population health and wellness in the patients seeking care at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and report clinical molecular genetic test results for oncology and inherited diseases.
  • Interpret and report clinical cytogenetic test results (chromosome analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis) for oncology and inherited diseases.
  • Enhance laboratory procedures and systems to assure high quality, accurate clinical test results are produced by the laboratory at all times.
  • Assist in troubleshooting of technical laboratory procedures and provide technical support to laboratory staff; oversee the laboratory Quality Management plan and ensure laboratory maintains plan compliance.
  • Consult with physicians, genetic counselors, and other clinical staff regarding technical specifications of tests. Answer questions and engage in discussions regarding the interpretation of patient results.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with regulatory agencies (CAP, CLIA) and regulatory guidelines; assume a lead role during inspections (internal and external).
  • Provide scientific and clinical assessment of emerging technologies and techniques through remaining current on scientific literature to improve current test methodologies and to develop new test offerings. Approve test method selection and validation plans.
  • Ensure appropriate SOPs are in place per regulatory requirements, perform annual review and approval of all laboratory SOPs.
  • Engage in scientific presentations at national meetings, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and actively participate in professional organizations and societies.
  • Participate in education of pathology trainees and medical students.
  • Facilitate the integration of laboratory genetics and genomics curriculum into resident and fellowship training.

Position Requirements:

  • Education: PhD or MD Certifications/Licenses:
  • PhD Candidates: Board certification in Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics AND Clinical Cytogenetics and Genomics or Laboratory Genetics and Genomics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
  • MD Candidates: Board certified or board eligible in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Board certified or board eligible in Molecular Genetic Pathology. Must be eligible for an unrestricted Wisconsin
  • Medical License. The ideal candidate will have experience in both cytogenetic tests and a variety of molecular approaches.
  • Experience: All levels of experience will be considered, but 3-5 years of experience in a CLIA/CAP clinical molecular genetics laboratory that performs next-generation sequencing for inherited diseases and oncology (to have included gene panel testing, whole genome and/or whole exome sequencing) is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Superior expertise and demonstrated proficiency in technical molecular genetics and cytogenetics laboratory procedures
  • Experience with interpretation and reporting of variants for inherited disorders
  • Knowledge of high-throughput genotyping platforms and automated sequencing methods
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements as they relate to clinical laboratory (CLIA/CAP) operations
  • Team player, comfortable interacting with all levels of management; able to champion an opinion or push back when necessary; able to work well with our current molecular and cytogenetics laboratory directors
  • Candidate must work well with other industry thought-leaders, scientists, strategic partners, the broader scientific / medical community

The candidate must qualify for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Pathology.

    MCW Pathology and Laboratory Department:
    The division of surgical pathology works under a subspecialty sign-out system, with close working relationships with clinicians and surgeons and a full complement of cutting edge clinical service lines. The residency program encompasses 16 positions, and the department has active fellowship programs in GI/liver pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, Breast/Gyn pathology, pediatric pathology, general surgical pathology, forensic pathology, and transfusion medicine. The department houses a full-service translational research core facility that serves the human tissues research needs of both the pathology faculty and translational researchers across campus. This laboratory offers a full range of technical platforms, from histology and immunohistochemistry through a full menu of molecular techniques and next generation sequencing, and these services are available to all faculty members.
