Memo from
Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine and
Executive Vice President

David King, MDJuly 18, 2016 MCW News -
I am pleased to announce the appointment of
David M. King, MD, as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), effective August 1, 2016, pending approval by the MCW Board of Trustees. Dr. King currently serves as Associate Professor in the MCW Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; Chief of the Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology; and Sarcoma Program Clinical Leader.

It is anticipated that Dr. King also will be awarded the Paul A. Jacobs, MD Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery and the rank of Professor with Tenure, by MCW’s Board of Trustees and MCW’s Rank and Tenure Committee.

Dr. King was identified as the top candidate for this role after a comprehensive national search process. I would like to extend my gratitude to Robert Havlik, MD, chair of the search committee – as well as to the full committee membership – for their unwavering dedication of time, insights and thoughtfulness in undertaking this key recruitment effort.

Dr. King graduated with honors from the University of Iowa in 1992 and received his MD degree from that institution in 1996. From 1996-2001, Dr. King completed an internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Chicago; he served a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology there from 2001-2002.

Dr. King joined MCW as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2002 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2008. He has served as Division Chief of Musculoskeletal Oncology and Sarcoma Program Clinical Leader since 2013. Additionally, Dr. King is Head of the Department’s Patient Satisfaction Committee and is Department Service Champion. He has broadly served the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as a member of the Research Committee since 2003 and as a current member of the Clinic Operations Team, and is actively involved in the residency program as a member of the Program Evaluation Committee and the Clinical Competency Committee.

Dr. King currently is board-certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has been chosen by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2009. Dr. King cares for patients with a wide range of pediatric and adult musculoskeletal issues. His clinical emphases include musculoskeletal tumors, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, limb salvage surgery, minimally invasive approaches for metastatic bone disease, complex joint reconstruction and vascular anomalies of bone and soft tissue. Dr. King’s research interests include minimizing wound complications following sarcoma resection, identifying adequate margin status following sarcoma resections, minimally invasive techniques to manage acetabular and pelvic tumors, and the role of fibrosis and necrosis in predicting sarcoma oncologic outcomes. Additionally, Dr. King has been significantly involved in medical student, resident and fellow education at MCW. He was named the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery’s Outstanding Clinical Instructor of the Year in 2005-2006 and Outstanding Faculty Educator of the Year in 2006-2007 and most recently in 2015-2016.

Dr. King has participated in almost 40 invited lectures, workshops and presentations, both nationally and internationally. Dr. King’s bibliography includes numerous refereed journals, book chapters, reviews and abstracts. He has served on the Journal Review Board of Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research since 2008.

Dr. King is a member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the American Orthopaedic Association.

I want to express my sincere gratitude and deepest appreciation to Jeffrey Schwab, MD, Chair and the Paul A. Jacobs, MD Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, who is retiring from his Chair role following 38 years of service at MCW – including 19 years as Chair. Dr. Schwab, however, will continue to pursue his clinical practice, research and teaching endeavors at MCW.
