Alliance for Veteran CARE

Transforming Veteran Engagement

The Alliance for Veteran Care, Arts, Research & Education (VetCARE) is a coalition of faculty, community partners, agencies, and veterans dedicated to transforming how institutions work with US military veterans. The Alliance for VetCARE approaches veteran engagement broadly through a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) lens, emphasizing scholarship that is combined with meaningful action to improve the lives of veterans and their families. The Alliance for VetCARE prioritizes the co-creation of knowledge through collaboration with veterans, centering on their experiences as the driver for deeper understandings about how to optimize services delivery.

History

The Alliance for VetCARE got its start in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area around 2007, with a number of partnerships and projects developed with US military veterans involved as co-researchers. Over time, the scale of these partnerships has grown to include statewide efforts, as well as connections with others in the Midwest and nationally. Rather than being a formal organization, the Alliance is made of like minded people who work in a broad coalition model.

Mission Areas: Clinical Care | Arts | Research | Education

The alliance for VetCARE takes an interdisciplinary approach to veteran engagement -- focusing on 4 broad areas, involving veterans in efforts to transform clinical care, arts and humanities, community-based research, and veteran engagement and education strategies.

Coalitions & Partnerships

Veteran Health Coalition

The Veteran Health Coalition (VHC) was initiated by members of the Alliance for VeterCARE through a Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program grant funded in 2013. The VHC connects veteran serving social services agencies in Wisconsin and serves as a referral source. The VHC also houses a VA CVEB in Wisconsin.

Dryhootch Partnership for Veteran Health

The Dryhootch Partnership for Veteran Health was initiated through collaboration between the leadership of Dryhootch, a veteran serving, veteran led mental health peer services organization and faculty from the Milwaukee VA and the Medical College of Wisconsin. The partnership expanded over time to include faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University, as well as community mental health leadership from Mental Health America. The partnership was originally funded by the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program in 2009, and has obtained significant grant funding from the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) Endowment, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and many others.
