Medical College of Wisconsin - Global Affiliation Agreements

There are several faculty with established affiliation agreements for their global health partnerships. These local/global partners have a long-term relationship with MCW faculty and include two or more departments in their global health efforts.

Beyond faculty's individual global engagement, department-wide efforts are also addressing health inequities within their specific specialty. MCW faculty are also collaborating with non-profit organizations, like BioVentures for Global Health, based in Seattle who works at the crossroads of the private and public sectors to advance research and improve health. It connects MCW faculty to people, resources, and ideas across biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, governments, and nonprofits to solve global health issues. It strategically develops and manages programs across the for-profit and non-profit sectors to accelerate R&D for poverty-related diseases like neglected tropical diseases to build biomedical Research and Development capacity in low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Kulwinder Dua has been collaborating with the Director, Dr. Goenka for nearly 10 years and has visited his hospital. He has provided over 50 lectures on various GI disorders and provided clinical care advising on complex cases across India for over 17 years. The goal of this affiliation agreement is to formalize the long-term partnership Dr. Dua has had and to explore additional ways to strengthen academic partnerships while improving health care and services in India.

In 2010, Belizean physicians asked Milwaukee area Emergency Medicine doctors to provide continuing medical and nursing education to strengthen pre-hospital transport and emergency care at their flagship hospital Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital (KHMH). Since 2010, our collective efforts have put forth a plan to address emergency care, disaster preparedness and response development for the country by developing a two year Training of the Trainers (TOT) program.

Dr. Suster is an alumni and member of their 2nd graduating class and has retained professional relationship with his alma mater since graduating by providing visiting professor lectures and hosting pathology residents on our medical campus for short term observerships. Dr. Suster would like to formalize his long-term relationship with this institution. The Department of Pathology would like to continue to host residents and faculty from this institution on our campus for short-term educational experiences. This initial partnership will start with our Department of Pathology and may extend to other disciplines/departments at MCW and The Catholic University.

Dr. Jacquelyn Kuzminski (Nohl) has been volunteering with Hillside since she was a medical student. Her family members are the founding directors of Hillside and she is currently on the board of directors. Pediatric residents will also rotate at Hillside and this agreement secures 10 annual spots for MCW medical students. This agreement does not include reciprocal exchanges and therefore, neither staff nor clinicians from Belize will rotate on our campus.

A second agreement was signed in November 2012 for the purpose of improving patient care by collaboration through use of teledermatology. This partnership specifically involves development of a Teledermatology Initiative in the MCW Department of Dermatology and an IRB-approved research study on Teledermatology in Belize.

In 2011, Dr. Dua was selected by the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) as their Ambassador to teach and mentor international physicians at the highest level of GI endoscopic care. La Corporación Medica Monte Sinaí, La Universidad Estatal De Cuenca was selected as the 2011 awardee and Dr. Dua spent one week there in November. He provided several lectures on endoscopy related topics and provided clinical care advising. Dr. Dua would like Monte Sinai faculty to visitor our campus to observe advanced techniques to strengthen their gastroenterology knowledge and clinical skills and to travel to Cuenca and perform and train locally other Monte Sinai faculty in advanced procedures.

The goal of this affiliation agreement is to formalize the long-term partnership Dr. Kulwinder Dua a professor in the Department of Medicine at MCW has had with Midas. Under this agreement, MCW medical students and Gastroenterology and Hepatology residents would be invited to rotate there for one-month electives. Additionally, Dr. Dua would like to sponsor Midas faculty on our campus to observe advanced endoscopy techniques and supervise hands-on training locally at their Institute to strengthen their gastroenterology knowledge and clinical skills.

A general MCW institutional agreement was signed on June 1, 2011 with the Yantalo Foundation, a global partner of Dr. North’s for over two years. Since then, Dr. North has recruited multidisciplinary faculty to address the health needs of the communities the Yantalo Peru Foundation serves. There are MCW faculty collaborators from surgery, pediatrics, urology and pathology. This new agreement further formalizes Dr. North’s Yantalo Peru Foundation partnership to include the Peruvian NIH (INS).

Dr. Schwab and a multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic and physical therapy services have been attending to Nicaraguan children and adults and partnering with governmental and non-profit institutions in-country for nearly 11 years. His team goes to Nicaragua twice a year to partner with the Nicaragua Ministry of Health to improve child and adult health. The purpose of this Affiliation Agreement is to combine efforts of these partners and to stimulate scientific cooperation and strengthen research, teaching and patient care, broaden the international experiences, and promote cross-cultural knowledge and understanding among MCW and UNAN faculty and staff.
