Third Year Graded Elective
The third year Graded Elective is a twenty eight-day rotation intended as an overview of orthopaedic surgery. Students will work as a member of an assigned specialty service team comprised of faculty, residents and students. The elective will provide the student with knowledge of an orthopaedic practice, the types of patients seen and the wide range of treatment options both surgical and non-surgical. The elective will teach the student to perform a thorough musculoskeletal examination. The elective will encourage the student to review relevant anatomy and incorporate this knowledge in his/her examination of patients.
Fourth Year Clinical Elective
The fourth year Clinical Electives are twenty eight-day rotations available at Froedtert Hospital, the VA Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. These electives are intended to provide the senior Medical Students with instruction and experience in the treatment of diseases and trauma of the musculoskeletal system, to provide the students with the opportunity to learn the basics as well as the more advanced part of orthopaedics at a major arthritic and reconstructive center, and to provide exposure to orthopaedic patients of greater age and subsequently clinical problems of greater depth.
Fourth Year Integrated Elective
The fourth year Integrated Electives are twenty eight-day rotations available at Froedtert Hospital and include Anatomical Basis of Musculoskeletal Problems, Clinical Correlation of Sports Medicine and Gross Anatomy, Comprehensive Understanding of Spinal Disorders, Multidisciplinary Sarcoma Group, and International Medical and Surgical Care.
Fourth Year Research Elective
The fourth year Research Elective is a twenty eight-day rotation at Froedtert Hospital. This rotation is intended to introduce the mechanism of preparing a clinical research project in the field of orthopaedic surgery. The student will review and organize clinical and/or basic science research material. The student will be able to document and interpret the findings in preparation of a meaningful report.
Fourth Year Surgically-Oriented Sub-Internship
The fourth year Surgically-Oriented Sub-Internships are twenty eight-day rotations available at Froedtert Hospital, the VA Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. These sub-internships are intended to allow the student to participate in the assessment and management of orthopaedic patients with advanced clinical problems at a major arthritic and reconstructive center. Students carry out an initial assessment of selected orthopaedic patients admitted to the emergency room, surgery or ward, during regular hours. Present this information to the resident and/or staff for development of final management plans and implementation. Students independently obtain a complete history and physical and develop a management plan for selected orthopaedic patients in an outpatient setting. Present this information to the resident and/or staff for development of final management plans and implementation. Students participate in the initial assessment and management of orthopaedic surgery patients while on call with the orthopaedic resident.
