The EDRC also provides expertise in the use of spatial data and geographic information systems, or GIS. Read more about the Epidemiology Data Resource Center.

The Epidemiology Data Resource Center is proud to be a part of the Institute for Health & Equity.

Geographic Information System (GIS)

A geographic information system, or GIS, is a powerful computer technology that allows data to be viewed and analyzed within a geographic context. Historically used most often by geographers, urban planners, and geologists, GIS technology is now being used with greater frequency by health researchers. The Epidemiology Data Resource Center (EDRC) hopes to help foster this growth.

The EDRC offers GIS mapping services and also functions as a resource for GIS information to the MCW community. In addition,we are a point of contact between MCW's GIS users, as well as between MCW and local institutions that use GIS for health research. On this site, we offer information about the GIS user group at MCW and links to online GIS resources.

MCW GIS User Group

This group consists of GIS users at MCW and affiliated institutions connected by a group email alias. This network provides contact with other local users in order to: Pose Questions; Offer Advice; Engage in Discussions about GIS. To join this group, contact the Epidemiology Data Resource Center at (414) 955-8040 or email EDRC@mcw.edu.

New Tool: HCUP Fast Stats

AHRQ has unveiled HCUP Fast Stats, a new online product from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project that provides easy access to the latest HCUP statistics from 41 States on numbers of hospital discharges by payer group (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, uninsured) for categories of conditions (surgical, mental health, injury, medical). Fast Stats enables State-by-State comparisons and can be used to analyze the effects of Medicaid expansion on hospital utilization levels and payment sources. This tool is still in development, so check back as new queries are added.
