Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at the Eye Institute

Medical College of Wisconsin Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Research Study - U24: Developing Cone-Dominant Retinal Disease Models

Purpose of study:

This project is being done to characterize photoreceptor structure in individuals with retinal detachments, inherited retinal degenerations, and those with normal vision using a variety of retinal imaging tools.

What is an Inherited Retinal Degeneration?

An Inherited Retinal Degeneration is an eye condition that causes vision loss due to death of photoreceptors.

What is a retinal detachment?

A retinal detachment is an eye condition caused by the separation of retina from its normal position at the back of the eye.

What is involved?

If you have a retinal detachment, you will be in this study for about 1 day. If you have inherited retinal degeneration, you will be in this study for about 2 years with 1 visit per year. If you have normal vision, you will be in the study for about 1 day, but may be re-contacted if the need arises. Study visits will include questionnaires, an eye exam, color and vision testing, adaptive optics imaging, and clinical imaging.

Compensation:

Research volunteers will receive $25/hour for each study visit that is completed.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you meet these criteria.

  • You have been told by a doctor that you have inherited retinal degeneration.
  • You have been told by a doctor that you have retinal detachment.
  • You have normal vision.
  • You meet the diagnostic criteria for the study (to be determined by your study doctor).
  • You are 7 years of age or older.
