Research Security Training Reminders for May 25, 2026 NIH Deadline

Please be aware that Research Security Training (RST) is now required for all federal sponsors, not just NIH and NSF. This training can be completed by taking the “Research Security Training (Combined Course) A condensed and combined single-module course based on the NSF’s Research Security Training” course in CITI. The completion record then populates in the eBridge Researcher Profile. There is validation built into the eBridge system that will stop a Funding Proposal from advancing to GCO for review if there is missing RST. It is the responsibility of the PI to make sure the training is taken and the Researcher Profile reflects this training to prevent any delays in review.

Note that this is the only acceptable institutional mechanism to validate Research Security Training. Personnel participating on MCW projects must take Research Security Training in CITI. Consortium partners can also take this training in CITI. These users can register for a free account in CITI and complete the condensed course in about an hour. The CITI training records are updated daily. The eBridge Help Desk is unable to verify the accuracy of a submitted CITI ID or training record, therefore the following troubleshoots can help ensure a record is updated accurately:

  • Confirm the CITI ID is entered on the person record in eBridge
  • Confirm the CITI account is associated with MCW
  • Confirm that the first name, last name, and email address in CITI match what is entered in Workday

CITI records populate in eBridge daily at 6 p.m. The eBridge Help Desk can also force new records to push into the system at any time.If you are experiencing difficulty getting your CITI Research Security Training record to show up in eBridge, please contact research@mcw.edu.

About Research Security Training

In compliance with notices issued by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), MCW requires Research Security Training for Senior/Key Personnel* on NSF and NIH sponsored funding applications. MCW is using the CITI platform to administer and track Research Security Training, which will also populate the eBridge Researcher Profile post-completion. MCW will certify compliance as part of the application, and proposals submitted without this certification may be deemed non-compliant.

The CITI Research Security course offers three modules:

  • Research Security Training (Combined Course) A condensed and combined single-module course based on the NSF’s Research Security Training
  • Research Security Training (NSF course)
  • Research Security Advanced Refresher

The Combined Course is a condensed version that satisfies the training requirement and takes approximately one hour to complete. The below steps offer instruction for accessing the CITI course and timeline for eBridge verification. A CITI Research Security Module Training Guide (PDF) is also available.

  1. Log into CITI. If you have not registered, click the “Register” button to set up an account with “Medical College of Wisconsin” as your organization.
  2. View courses under Medical College of Wisconsin and find “Research Security.”
  3. In the module selection, click “Research Security Training (Combined Course) A condensed and combined single-module course based on the NSF’s Research Security Training.”
  4. Complete the module and take the Quiz at the end, which is a 1-question attestation of training.
  5. The training will appear in your Researcher Profile > Human Research Training in eBridge within 1-4 days. You have the option to download a Completion Certificate for your records.

If you have questions about Research Security Training, please contact the Office of Research.
