For 2017-2018 the stipends are as follows:
The stipend is deposited directly in the individual's account once a month, on the last day of the month. MCWAH offers direct deposit at most banks, savings and loans, and credit unions in the greater Milwaukee area. The funds are available on payday. If the payday falls on a holiday or weekend, the funds are available the day before the holiday or weekend.
The working Condition Fringe Benefit is a $1500 per academic year taxable payment to housestaff to help defray expenses for license fees, DEA fees, license exam fees and text books.
Housestaff are not required to submit receipts to claim this benefit. Housestaff that complete training mid-academic year will be paid on a pro-rated amount on their last paycheck. The benefit will be paid in two $750 installments; one on December 31 and one on June 30. The $1500 payment is a taxable benefit.
PGY2 & PGY3 Ophthalmology residents are allowed 15 working days of annual paid vacation. PGY4 residents are granted 15 working days of vacation and 5 working days for job or fellowship interviews.
Maternity and paternity leave: Accrued sick and vacation days may be used for paid leave. Additional unpaid leave would be granted per FMLA guidelines.
The department provides generous support for resident attendance at national meetings. Each resident may attend one national meeting, in either their 2nd or 3rd year. Up to four (4) calendar days of educational leave will be granted and a stipend toward meeting expenses will be provided.
In addition, for those residents who have their research work accepted for poster or oral presentation at a national meeting, the department will provide up to three (3) educational leave days. The department will provide reimbursement for travel expenses (subject to MCW business policies), such as meeting registration, coach airfare (purchased at least three weeks in advance), two nights’ lodging, and meal per diem. One half of these expenses will be reimbursed upon submission of all required receipts; the other half will be reimbursed upon submission of a manuscript for peer-review journal publication with the approval of the sponsoring faculty member.

While Ophthalmology does not require in-hospital call, we do realize that the residents are sometimes called in for lengthy periods of time. The department will provide a $50 Froedtert meal card each month to each PGY2 and PGY3 resident. This card works on a “debit” system, like a store gift card, and can be used at any Froedtert cafeteria, deli, or snack bar location.
The department will provide each resident with the most current set of BCSC books upon starting the program. In addition, each resident will receive a copy of “Practical Ophthalmology: A Manual for Beginning Residents”. Many specialty-specific texts and DVD’s are available for checkout from the residency coordinator for additional study and reference.
The department will provide an iPad Mini to each incoming resident and instructions for loading the Wills Manual onto the iPad at no cost to the resident. Residents are also provided with a $240 allowance to purchase any book(s) of their choice from the MCW bookstore.
Membership is provided for each resident to the Milwaukee Ophthalmological Society (MOS). MOS meetings are held monthly from October through April (except December). The cost of these dinner meetings is also covered for the residents.
Other conferences held in the evenings, including Cataract Conference, Microsurgical Skills Lab, and Journal Club, usually offer a department-supplied meal as well.
The department covers the cost of the annual OKAP exam for each resident.
At the end of the PGY3 year, residents are enrolled in a VISX certification course offered by a local surgeon. The department pays all costs associated with this course.
