Memorable Moments from Past Rare Disease Symposia

Since 2023, the Mellowes Center has successfully hosted an annual Rare Disease and Rare Cancer Symposium, creating a unique space to bridge seemingly disparate areas of study through the unifying lens of precision medicine. The events bring together internationally recognized speakers, researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates to share insights, debate challenges, and envision the future of rare disease and cancer research. Each symposium features sessions with multiple speakers and open discussions that encourage collaboration and the exchange of ideas across institutions and disciplines. A highlight of the Symposia is the Rare Storytellers event with Harmony for Hope, which underscores the human side of rare diseases through emotional patient stories and performances, reminding participants of the urgency to innovate and collaborate. Together, these symposia have fostered connections, inspired new approaches, and reinforced the essential link between discovery, clinical practice, and patient advocacy.

2023

The Mellowes Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin hosted its inaugural multi-day hybrid Symposium on Rare Diseases and Rare Cancers in the Era of Systems Biology in 2023, bringing together researchers and clinicians to highlight advances in genetic discovery and treatment. The event emphasized collaboration in precision medicine and the translation of innovative research into clinical practice to address unmet medical needs. The keynote lecture by Dr. Pablo Lapunzina underscored the power of genomic data mining to better understand rare diseases and enable new diagnostics and therapies. Sessions focused on five key areas, including rare diseases and cancers, emerging technologies, mitochondrial and immune dysfunctions, and systems biology approaches. The symposium also featured the Rare Storytellers Meet Milwaukee event, blending Dr. Lovell’s personal patient experiences with scientific discussion led by Dr. Charlson to promote awareness and resilience. Together, these elements fostered meaningful knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration. The event highlighted the Mellowes Center’s commitment to advancing precision medicine and improving outcomes for patients with rare conditions.

2024

In 2024, the Mellowes Center convened its 2nd Annual Rare Diseases & Rare Cancers Symposium as a dynamic, single-day hybrid gathering focused on accelerating progress in precision medicine. The event created a forum for scientists, clinicians, and patients to exchange ideas and explore emerging strategies for understanding complex, rare conditions. Program sessions highlighted advances in chromatin biology, functional genomics, and the growing impact of pharmacogenomics and epigenetic therapies on personalized care. The keynote presentation by Dr. Peter Lewis offered an in-depth look at how histone modifications shape disease processes and present new opportunities for intervention. A defining feature of the symposium was the Rare Storytellers® session, which brought a human perspective to the science through Alexis Feucht’s lived experience with glioblastoma. This segment, complemented by clinical insight with Dr. Ryuma Tanaka and music by Katherine Nagy, underscored the importance of integrating patient voices into research and care. Throughout the day, discussions reflected a strong emphasis on bridging discovery science with real-world clinical application. Collectively, the symposium reinforced the value of cross-disciplinary collaboration in driving meaningful advances for rare disease communities.
