MCW Mellowes Center Educational Opportunities

The Mellowes Center is committed to expanding access to education in precision medicine, recognizing that even healthcare professionals often struggle to keep pace with the rapid advances in genomics and personalized care. Academic Pathways in Medicine and Science

Faculty at the Mellowes Center are deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of healthcare and research professionals, providing guidance and hands-on opportunities to students entering medical, graduate, or pharmacy school at MCW. The Medical School prepares medical students to become the best physicians of tomorrow with a spirit of continuous learning and the skills to adapt to whatever may come next in medical discoveries and best practices, as well as in the business side of practicing medicine.

Graduate School

The MCW Graduate School program offerings include various degree types in broad areas such as bioethics, biomedical engineering, biomedical sciences, biostatistics, and public health. The school’s programs offer you the unique opportunity to earn your degree or certificate while training with nationally-recognized biomedical and health researchers and scientists. The School also offers a supportive postdoctoral fellowship training experience as well as undergraduate research opportunities.

Pharmacy School

The Pharmacy School prepares you to become the pharmacist of the future, fulfilling the increasing demand for pharmacists capable of providing a broader range of patient care services. As one of the few pharmacy schools in the country offering a three-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree located on an academic medical center, MCW’s Pharmacy School will provide you with the experience you need to be an innovator and an advocate for providing greater access to primary and preventative care for patients. You’ll gain early and extensive exposure to a variety of clinical settings and world-class research across a range of specialties.

Advanced Degrees in Precision Medicine

As healthcare continues to shift towards personalized medicine, genetics and genomics are becoming critical components in nearly every branch of medicine. In response to this trend, the Mellowes Center, in partnership with groups like MCW’s Institute for Health and Humanity and Marquette University, has launched new degree-granting programs to prepare our region for a data-driven healthcare system and modern research.

Master of Precision Medicine

The online Precision Medicine Education program trains clinicians to better diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases by accounting for individual variations in genes, environments, and lifestyles. Ultimately, the program improves the ability of healthcare professionals to predict which treatments will work best for specific patients.

Master of Science in Genetic Counseling (MSGC)

This program trains genetic counselors who are skilled in providing patients and other members of the care team with information on the complex genetic basis of many diseases, leading to personalized screenings, diagnostic testing, and better treatments.

Masters in Bioinformatics

This program is offered jointly with Marquette University with an improved, convenient curriculum for students on both campuses. It is designed to equip graduates with a unique blend of theoretical and computational skills and practical experience in the rapidly expanding and evolving field of Bioinformatic analysis.

Apprenticeship in Medicine (AIM)

AIM provides carefully selected high school students the opportunity to stimulate their interest in careers in medicine, biomedical research-and allied health. AIM emphasizes academic preparation, achievement and career awareness.

Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE)

Offered by the MCW Graduate School, this program is a non-paid, experiential-based program for undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited college/university. Applicants to PURE who are chosen for the program will be placed with a MCW faculty mentor who will provide varying levels of exposure to basic, translational and population research.

Mellowes Center Research Trainee & Internship Programs

These programs offer a range of paid, unpaid, for-credit, and not-for-credit options for individuals who are currently enrolled as high school, college, or graduate students. Depending upon the specific program, an affiliation agreement may be needed with the trainee or intern’s current school. These individuals work under the direction of a faculty member to train and complete a research project, which is often presented to the laboratory and broader Center with the potential for abstract or manuscript submission.
