MCW Mellowes Center Educational Opportunities
The Mellowes Center is committed to expanding access to education in precision medicine, recognizing that even healthcare professionals often struggle to keep pace with the rapid advances in genomics and personalized care. Our vision is to help build a future healthcare system staffed by individuals equipped to harness these advances to their full potential. To that end, the Center offers educational opportunities for learners at all levels—from high school students to professionals—through hands-on lab days, seminars, mentorship, and community outreach. We welcome schools and organizations to contact us to explore ways to get involved and learn more about the promise of precision medicine.
From Concepts to Pipettes: Precision Medicine Training
Students dive into the world of precision medicine through engaging lectures and hands-on laboratory experiences, gaining firsthand experience in the science shaping the future of healthcare.
Academic Pathways in Medicine and Science
Faculty at the Mellowes Center are deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of healthcare and research professionals, providing guidance and hands-on opportunities to students entering medical, graduate, or pharmacy school at MCW. Through collaborative research experiences and personalized advising, our faculty help students explore careers in biomedical science and precision medicine. This mentorship fosters exposure to real-world applications, encouraging curiosity and confidence while establishing a strong foundation in research training.
Advanced Degrees in Precision Medicine
As healthcare continues to shift towards personalized medicine, genetics and genomics are becoming critical components in nearly every branch of medicine. In response to this trend, the Mellowes Center, in partnership with groups like MCW’s Institute for Health and Humanity and Marquette University, has launched new degree-granting programs to prepare our region for a data-driven healthcare system and modern research.
Training and Enrichment Programs
The Mellowes Center is committed to engaging learners at all stages—from high school students exploring future careers to postdoctoral researchers deepening their expertise. We partner with academic programs and educators to offer hands-on experiences, mentorship, and exposure to real-world research in genomic sciences and precision medicine. We invite you to explore our list of leaders and members, learn about the areas of focus, and be inspired by the wide range of opportunities available. Whether you are just beginning your path in science or continuing advanced training, we welcome your curiosity and growth here at the Mellowes Center.
Mellowes Center Research Trainee & Internship Programs
These programs offer a range of paid, unpaid, for-credit, and not-for-credit options for individuals who are currently enrolled as high school, college, or graduate students. Depending upon the specific program, an affiliation agreement may be needed with the trainee or intern’s current school. These individuals work under the direction of a faculty member to train and complete a research project, which is often presented to the laboratory and broader Center with the potential for abstract or manuscript submission.
Partnering with Schools to Inspire Future Scientists
The Mellowes Center welcomes partnerships with area high schools to inspire the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. Schools interested in bringing students for lab experience days or arranging seminars on genomics, biotechnology, or careers in biomedical research are encouraged to contact us to explore opportunities for engagement.
