Medical College of Wisconsin Colorectal Surgery Fellowship

Our mission is to prepare graduates for successful careers as independent, thoughtful, and technically excellent colorectal surgeons who are leaders in quality, innovation, and patient-centered care. Graduates of our program are eligible for specialty board certification through the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

About Our Program

The Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin offers comprehensive, high-volume training within a collaborative academic and community-based environment. Our one-year, ACGME-accredited program accepts one fellow annually and provides extensive experience in the full breadth of colon and rectal disease, with expertise in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery, complex colorectal cancer care, endoscopy, and inflammatory bowel disease. Fellows train primarily at Froedtert Hospital, with additional exposure at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital, benefiting from multidisciplinary conferences, dedicated research support, and mentorship from nationally recognized faculty.

Eligibility Requirements
Successful completion of ACGME educational requirements to sit for the ABS or AOBS qualifying examinations or be certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) or American Osteopathic Board of Surgery (AOBS) in surgery.

Program Overview
  • One fellow is accepted into the program each year.
  • The fellow will train primarily at Froedtert Hospital for 10 calendar months.
  • The fellow will be on rotation at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital (Waukesha, WI) for 2 months and will work closely with two board-certified colorectal surgeons in private practice.
Clinical Experience
  • Endoscopy
  • Advanced minimally invasive and robotic techniques, with access to robotic simulators and dual-console robots
  • Complex cancer care of the colon, rectum, and anus

  • Service-specific multidisciplinary tumor board
  • Surgery morbidity and mortality conference
  • Surgical and institutional grand rounds

Monthly

  • IBD Conference
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery Teleconference

Quarterly

  • Service-specific journal clubs

Application

Interested applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Completion prior to 8/1/26 of an ABS-accredited General Surgery Program or AOBS surgery program and completion of the educational requirements for the qualifying examinations
  • Demonstrate through their previous surgery training that they are of sufficient clinical maturity, technical skills and surgical judgement for this program, as assessed in letters of reference and interviews
  • US Citizen or naturalized US Citizen (Unfortunately we are not currently able to accept trainees on a visa program)
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the state of Wisconsin

Matching

NRMP
The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Candidates are required to register for the NRMP Specialties Matching Service (SMS) Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Match.

The Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals and the Department of Surgery provide extensive benefits.

The Colorectal Surgery Fellow position benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, free parking, on-call meals, and a three-week paid vacation. Additionally, fellows receive seven days to attend CME conference(s) per year and protected time is given every week for didactics.
