MCW International Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship Training in Transplant Surgery

About Our Program

The International Research Fellowship in Transplant Surgery offers a unique opportunity for international research scholars to collaborate with nationally recognized transplant surgeons at the Medical College of Wisconsin. This program is designed to promote academic research, foster global partnerships, and provide fellows with immersive exposure to the transplant surgery environment in the United States. Fellows are encouraged to share their experiences upon returning home, contributing to the global advancement of transplant care.

This fellowship program is sponsored by the Division of Transplant Surgery, part of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, WI.

Fellowship Experience

Fellows are integrated into the Division of Transplant Surgery and will have the opportunity to:

  • Participate in ongoing clinical and outcomes-based transplant research (kidney, pancreas, and liver).
  • Engage in weekly didactic sessions, journal clubs, and transplant selection committee meetings.
  • Contribute to abstracts, manuscripts, and presentations submitted to national and international transplant conferences.
Research Focus

Fellows will work under faculty mentorship to:

  • Lead or contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts.
  • Utilize robust institutional and multi-center databases (e.g., UNOS, TriNetX, SRTR).
  • Pursue quality improvement and clinical research projects relevant to global transplant practices.
Tuition & Funding

This is an unpaid research fellowship. Participants are responsible for their own travel, housing, health and travel insurance and living expenses. No tuition will be charged.

Fellow candidates may be financially sponsored by their home institution or a third party. Documentation of financial support/sponsorship should be included in the application materials for candidates who will be financially supported by their home institution.

Application Requirements & How to Apply

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Letter of interest describing academic goals and reasons for pursuing the fellowship.
  • Current CV in English.
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Medical school diploma and verification of training level.
  • Visa eligibility documentation (J-1).
  • Proof of health insurance.
  • Commitment to a minimum 12-month fellowship.
  • Proof of complete vaccination, recent PPD test, and normal chest X-ray if applicable.
  • One passport-sized photo.
  • Documentation of financial support or sponsorship funding from home institution, if available.
