Medical Students

Several PCOR faculty work with MCW student interns via the Medical Student Summer Research Program. The program exposes early year medical students to research and careers in academic medicine and research through 8-12 weeks of hands-on basic science or clinical laboratory research experiences that are otherwise not available in the course of their regular curriculum.

The Medical Student Summer Research Program is administered and coordinated through the department of Academic Affairs.

Summer Students

During the summer of 2017, PCOR hosted five students from MCW’s Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) and six students from CTSI’s 500 STARS Initiative.

SPUR students completed an independent research project with the assistance of PCOR faculty and master’s level statisticians, presented their findings, and will be submitting their work for publication.

STARS students completed a review of the literature surrounding topics of interest and presented their findings during PCOR’s student seminar and the STARS program poster session.

Both SPUR and STARS students also took part in weekly discussions surrounding social determinants of health, global health, and statistics; and volunteered with the Young Cats program, a summer project with the Metcalfe Park Community Bridges Program. Projects investigated the impact of social determinants such as food insecurity and adverse childhood experiences; considered preferences of patients including sources of cancer information, and exchanging information with their provider through health information technology; analyzed disparities in clinical outcomes by age, race, and immigration status; and highlighted work being done to provide better care for patients with chronic kidney disease, diabetes, breast cancer, hypertension, and colorectal cancer.
