Cancer Center

The Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center's mission is to uncover the causes of cancer through basic and clinical research, and to translate this knowledge into effective treatment of cancer patients. It is a matrix cancer center with clinical facilities at Froedtert Hospital, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The MCW Cancer Center is the only academic cancer center located in Wisconsin's most populous region. More than 200 physicians and scientists are affiliated with the center.

These scientists and physicians have contributed to breakthroughs in:

  • Functional magnetic resonance imaging
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Low-dose radio-therapy
  • Use of radio-protective agents
  • Improved melanoma detection in sentinel lymph nodes
  • T cell-depleted bone marrow transplantation from unrelated donors
  • Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

Philanthropy plays an important role in advancing the Cancer Center by providing necessary baseline support. This baseline support allows our investigators to achieve research results which positions the Cancer Center to gain extramural private and public funding.

Private philanthropy is used by the Cancer Center to provide seed funding awards to bright, new investigators for their start-up research projects. The seed funding grants allow researchers to develop baseline research results to position them competitively to receive National Institutes of Health or National Cancer Institute awards. Currently, seed fund grant recipients are receiving about $10 of competitive funding for every dollar of philanthropy invested.

The community also provides important recruitment funding needed to attract excellent faculty members and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research, provide care and implement community outreach and education. Recruitment funding allows the Cancer Center to recruit postdoctoral fellows and faculty to conduct research. Endowed professorships allow the Cancer Center to identify and develop programs around multi-disciplinary themes.
