Trauma Biomechanics at ZVAMC Labs

Our Trauma Biomechanics research includes investigations into human tolerance to injury, mechanisms of injury, methods of investigating injury, as well as the design and evaluation of related interventions. Mechanisms of injury studied here include injury in the vehicular environment, including automotive and aviation; injury in the military environment; as well as injury in the occupational environment. Through rigorous validation studies, ZVAMC Labs investigate injury criteria for anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs, or test dummies) and contribute to the development of new ATDs.  Data derived from our testing activities can be entered into computer simulations that replicate complex loading scenarios without use of test occupant or vehicle. These replications allow for rapid and cost-effective evaluations of traumatic loading scenarios and the effect of safety interventions.
