Radiation Therapy

In radiation oncology, cancerous tumors, lesions, and several benign conditions are treated with high-energy radiation, x-rays or electron beams. Radiation therapy is delivered using multi-vendor-latest technology linac machines (linear accelerator) to provide external beam radiation. Linac-based radiation therapy allows for fast (10-20 minutes) and accurate targeted delivery of radiation to tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Unlike surgical treatments, radiation therapy is painless and non-invasive. The x-rays pass through the skin and body tissues, to deposit energy at depths that destroy cancer cells in the tumor. Whereas electron beams do not penetrate deep in the body and are used for treating superficial tumors (those near the surface of the skin) or certain cancers in areas like the head and neck and extremities.

The therapy is managed by qualified oncologist, physicists, dosimetrist, therapists and nurses. Individual cancer treatment plans are developed by adjusting linac parameters using the standard of care protocols to deliver a wide range of treatments including 3DCRT (3-dimentional conformal radiotherapy), IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy), VMAT (volumetric-modulated arc therapy) for a variety of tumors (aggressive and palliative) and anatomical sites (head and neck, lung, breast, nodes, sarcoma, prostate, gyn malignancies and many more).
