What are unique career paths for PharmD graduates?
Blog post written by: Ana Boutris, 2026 PharmD Candidate
A Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree opens the door to a wide variety of career opportunities – far beyond the traditional role of a community pharmacist. While many are familiar with pharmacists working in retail settings, you might be surprised to learn how pharmacists contribute in specialized and impactful ways across the healthcare system. Here are three exciting career paths you can explore with a PharmD:
Oncology Pharmacist
- Oncology pharmacists work closely with oncologists and other healthcare providers to support patients throughout their cancer journey. They ensure patients receive the safest and most effective medications before, during and after treatment. From managing side effects to optimizing chemotherapy regimens, oncology pharmacists play a key role in improving cancer outcomes and survivorship.
Nuclear Pharmacist
- This highly specialized field involves the preparation and handling of radiopharmaceuticals or radioactive drugs used in diagnostic imaging and certain treatments. Nuclear pharmacists help target specific organs or disease states, such as in thyroid conditions or certain cancers, contributing to precise and effective care. It is a great path if you are interested in both pharmacy and technology-heavy, behind-the-scenes work in medicine.
Medical Science Liaison (MSL)
- MSLs act as a bridge between pharmaceutical companies and the medical community. In this role, pharmacists use their clinical and scientific expertise to build relationships with key opinion leaders and healthcare professionals. MSLs often specialize in therapeutic areas such as neurology (e.g., multiple sclerosis), gastroenterology (e.g., ulcerative colitis), infectious diseases or pulmonology (e.g., cystic fibrosis). It is a dynamic, non-traditional career the blends science, communication and strategy.
